ILLUSTRATION
After years of suffering from what I call a “fear of drawing,” I recently had a breakthrough after acquiring an iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil. With it, I tried to recreate the look-and-feel of drawings I made in college, as a student of Faith Ringgold—mostly employing a charcoal or pastel brush setting in Adobe Sketch. Still, I wasn’t pleased with the results, nor the process, which seemed limiting and a bit antiseptic. Even more elusive was a strong sense of value and contrast. I eventually recalled that I would often draw with white chalk on black paper. Using Adobe Sketch, I created black watercolor textured backdrops and set the pencil to white chalk. This opened things up for me. I’ve posted some of the results here.
